Description

Sh2-140 is not exactly the Cepheus Bubble, although it is located on its margins. The Cepheus bubble is a huge molecular cloud located 2,700 light years away in an arm of our galaxy. With a diameter of 500 light years, it occupies about 10º in the sky. The explosion of massive stars in the center of the bubble generated waves of gas in expansion, with new stars forming especially at its edges. At its southern edge lies the well-known Elephant Trunk Nebula (Sh2-131), and at its northwestern edge the less famous Sh2-140. It is a circular emission nebula, hidden on its northeast side by a dense dust cloud known as LDN 1204. It is clearly seen that in this region there are fewer stars, and in the limit, columns and wisps of gas are observed .

It is not a faint nebula, but I took a lot of exposure time to try to reveal details in its uniform appearance, especially at the limit with the dark nebula. To enhance these details I composed the red channel with 90% HII and only 10% R, and I modified the final luminance by composing an L image with 70% HRGB and 30% HII. The bright, colorful stars in the foreground, magnitude 6-8, bring a lot of life to the photo. I took it on 14 nights in October and November, with a total of 29 h 6 m of exposure, in RGB and HII.

In the field of photography two reflection nebulae are well visible: on the left GN 22.12.3 (LBN 500), and on the upper right vdB 153.
